The Many Features of Dental Implant
Posted under: Health by Admin
So far dental implant is one of the most visually appealing techniques of recovering a missing tooth.
A dental implant is a false tooth that is used to replace a missing tooth. It is comprised of two parts, the implant and the dental crown. The root or base is made from titanium and is directly fused to the jawbone. The crown which is made from porcelain is custom made to approximate the look of a genuine tooth.
One exclusive feature of a dental implant is that it is indistinguishable from the other existing teeth, as false teeth. This is because the root of the crown is embedded on the gums and appears to be its natural outgrowth.
Another advantage of dental implant is that it doesn’t bring on stress on the teeth besides it, in contrast to a dental bridge where in the two teeth that beside the missing tooth are used by the bridge as anchor or support. The surfaces of these two teeth are roughened so that a cap or crown which is the end parts of the dental bridge will be placed over these two adjoining teeth.
With dental implant you feel more comfortable when eating and speaking which you cannot do with dentures since it tends to move while you eat and whenever you speak. There’s even a probability that it can be dislodged out of the mouth during gurgling or if it’s a single denture there’s the probability that it can be swallowed while eating or while asleep. For those who have been wearing dentures for quite a long time now, it’s now time to substitute it with dental implants which aside from being more convenient to wear, it is definitely more visually pleasing.
The dental implant procedure
The titanium implant is fused to the jawbone via surgery. This is most effectively executed by a gum specialist or periodontist. In the first stage of the procedure, the titanium implant will be fused on the area of the jawbone where the tooth is missing. Osseointegration will make the implant to be securedly held in place by the jawbone. The process of osseointegration takes place for a period from two to six months. After the surgery inflammation of the gums around the implant may happen, this is readily treated with some pain medications. To avert further inflammation and infection, antiseptic mouthwash must be used and food consumption should be limited to soft foods and soups only.
The second stage of the procedure is the placement of an abutment in the implant; this should be undertaken only after osseointegration had already happened. This is like a post where the crown will be attached. The crown is specially made to resemble the remaining teeth. When osseointegration had already occurred, the periodontist will now affixed an abutment on the implant. The abutment will link the implant to the crown. The crown is specially fashioned to look like the existing teeth.
A prerequisite for a successful implant is well densed and sturdy jaw bone, especially the area of the bone where the implant will be embedded. A dense and healthy bone will facilitate osseointegration of the implant and will hold the implant to stay in place. Cigarette smokers have a very small chance for a successful teeth implant. Hence, if you truly desire to have implants, it is best that you stop smoking first if not you’ll just be wasting your money as this treatment is quite expensive. Thus, cosmetic dentists do not prescribe this to smokers, but if they really want to have implants then they must quit smoking first, so they will not be wasting money as this treatment is costly.
But, if you have strong jawbone and can strictly practice proper oral hygiene, and does not smoke, dental implants can be your best choice to replace your lost tooth or teeth.
